The story of Lunik IX – Slovakia
Artur Conka is a photography graduate from the University Of Derby. His photography canon has focused on the plight of the Roma Gypsies and Travellers in Europe. He himself is Roma and feel that it is important to give the Roma, so long voiceless without influence or consideration by those in power, a voice.Artur came to Britain in 1998 as an 8-year-old migrant. He always wanted to return to his roots in the former Czechoslovakia and document the environment and, more importantly, the people at Lunik IX housing estate in Kosice, Slovakia, where he had spent a number of years before its tragic decline into Slovakia’s largest ghetto, with 99% unemployment and alarming numbers of those addicted to drugs and alcohol at all ages.Artur’s work has appeared in various international publications including Huffington Post, The Independent, Vice Magazine, Foto8 Magazine, Vas.Cas.Sk, Creative Boom, Lab Kultur TV Magazine, Derby Evening Telegraph,
