Chernov + UnFrame in Extra, the museum magazine published by FoMu
The UnFrame photographer Mstyslav Chernov gets double page spread in EXTRA, a museum magazine published by FoMu, the museum of photography in Antwerp, Belgium. Extra has a thematic approach and contains essays and portfolios of national and international writers/photographers. The current issue published in July, focuses on the theme ‘conflict’ and includes an article by Taco Hidde Bakker on the theoretical work of Ariella Azoulay “barricades and smokescreens – about the civil contract of photography“.
The museum magazine is available in the museum shop. It’s mainly aimed at providing extra insight in a specific theme that also resonates in the exhibitions at the same time (next to a major World War 1 exhibition there’s The Enclave by Richard Mosse and Ponte City by Mikhael Subotzky and Patrick Waterhouse).
The photo by Mstyslav is part of a work “The art of barricades” which focus on the complex structures used as strongholds during the Maidan square revolution. Protesters stubbornly built and rebuilt the barricades during the past winter in order to resist as longer as possible the police assaults.
